In the last post, we told you that aTV Flash was updated with a beta, to work on the AppleTV 2G. aTV Flash is a user-friendly software package that supercharges your new black AppleTV, unleashing a plethora of new functionality – basically, at the moment, it will let you install a browser, last.fm, Plex and nitoTV.

Let’s see how to get and install aTV Flash black – it might get a little bit tricky for some of you…
How To: ( assuming your AppleTV is jailbroken on iOS 4.1 )
1. Go to firecore’s site and buy aTV Flash black for a discounted price of $19.95
2. Open the DMG and drag the application to your Applications folder.
3. Locate and run the aTV Flash (black) application.
4. The installer will copy a few small files to your computer. (these will then be transferred to the AppleTV)
5. You will then be prompted to select your AppleTV from a drop-down list.
6. The files will be transferred to the AppleTV.
7. Once complete the AppleTV will automatically be restarted for the changes to take effect.
8. After installation all apps and updates can be installed directly on the AppleTV through the Maintenance –> Manage Extras menu.
That is the ideal case. But in some cases, you won’t be able to pass step 6. It will ask you for your password, which is alpine if you didn’t change it, but it won’t let you install the actual files. In that case, here’s what you need to do:
1. Drag and drop aTV Flash black.pkg on your desktop…
2. Right click on it, and ‘Show package contents’…
3. In the ‘Plugins’ folder, you will have multiple bundles. Right click on ‘AppleTVInstallerUploadPlugin.bundle’ and ‘Show package contents’

4. Inside you will have a folder called ‘Resources’ and inside that folder a file called ‘payload.tar’. Double-click on that file to unpack it.
5. Inside you will see a folder called ‘payload’ and inside that folder you will have 4 .deb files. Copy them on to your desktop.
6. Now using a SFTP client ( most common one is Cyberduck ), SSH into your AppleTV, and copy all those .deb files. You can copy them wherever you want to, just make sure you know the path…

ssh root@your.appletv.ip.address

8. Now, it’s time to install those .deb files. Install in this exact order. In the terminal shell, type:
dpkg – i sources.deb

killall Lowtide

The installation process is a no-brainer, as long as you have a computer and an AppleTV connected on the same WiFi network. But some people might experience troubles with the provided installer. We will post a tutorial on how to manually install and bypass all the issues in a few. Stay tuned.
